-sophisticated way of recording information

-knotted cords, fibers woven differently, sequence of knots, things clumped together

-recorded everything from land measurements and census data to poems and myths

-only certain ppl taught how to makes and read

-could be used as mail

-most destroyed by two events (ruler atahualpa winning a conflict and didn’t want to be remembered as killing his brother, spanish arriving and not understanding so they destroyed)
