Indications, Contraindications, Precautions Flashcards
Indications for Diathermy (4)
- Modulate pain and edema
- Soft tissue healing
- Nerve healing
- Bone healing
Contraindications for Diathermy in Wound Care (5)
• Metal implants (Orthopedic hardware, Shrapnel) • Ischemic tissue • Acute osteomyelitis • Anesthetized areas • Patient with tendency to hemorrhage
Contraindications for Diathermy General Rules (6)
• Malignancy • Pacemakers, other implanted stimulators • Pregnancy • Deep tissues/internal organs • Over eyes, testes, growing epiphyses • Substitute for conventional pain/edema control
Precautions for Diathermy in Wound Care (3)
• Heat sensitivity
• Inflammatory processes
• Situations that could
concentrate field (Moist dressings, Periwound adhesives, Significant exudate, Perspiration)
Precautions for Diathermy General Rules (5)
- Near electronic or magnetic equipment
- Obesity
- Copper IUD
- Skeletal immaturity
- Pregnant clinician: stay 1-2 ft. away from PSWD
Indications for Ultrasound (7)
- Wound healing (Dermal ulcers, Skin incision healing)
- Tendon and ligament injury
- Fracture healing
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Pain
- Soft tissue shortening
- Calcium deposit resorption
Contraindications for Ultrasound in Wound Care (3)
• Over spinal cord after laminectomy • Hemophiliacs • Patients with vascular abnormalities (Deep vein thrombosis, Emboli, Severe atherosclerosis)
Contraindications for Ultrasound General Rules (6)
Malignant tumor • Pregnancy (over abdomen, low back, pelvis) • Over central nervous system tissue • Joint cement, plastic components • Pacemaker • Over eyes or reproductive organs
Precautions for Ultrasound in Wound Care (4)
• Over subcutaneous bony prominences • Over subcutaneous major nerves (thermal may alter nerve conduction velocity) • Over the cranium • Over anesthetized areas
Precautions for Ultrasound General Rules (4)
- Acute inflammation
- Over growing epiphyseal plates
- Over fractures (use low dose)
- Over breast implants
Indications for ESTIM (7)
- Pressure Injuries
- Diabetic ulcers
- Venous ulcers
- Ischemic ulcers
- Traumatic wounds
- Surgical wound
- Burns
Contraindications for ESTIM in Wound Care (5)
• Untreated osteomyelitis • Malignancy near/on the wound • Active bleeding • Placement of electrodes over substances containing iodine or metal ions • Placement of electrode transcerebrally
Contraindications for ESTIM General Rules (5)
• Pacemaker • Unstable arrhythmias • Over carotid sinus • Venous or arterial thrombosis • Over pelvis, abdomen, trunk, low back during pregnancy
Precautions for ESTIM in Wound Care (4)
• Cardiac disease • Impaired mentation or sensation • Malignant tumors anywhere else on body • Skin irritation under electrodes
Precautions for ESTIM General Rules (4)
• Cardiac disease • Impaired mentation or sensation • Malignant tumors anywhere else on body • Skin irritation under electrodes
Indications for Pulsed Lavage (4)
• Recommended for treatment of necrotic wound or wounds
containing nonviable tissue or debris
• Facilitates removal of necrotic tissue
• Promotes healing by creating environment that will enable formation
of granulation tissue and epithelialization
• Continue treatment until all necrotic, nonviable tissue is gone and
wound bed is fully covered with granulation tissue
Contraindications for Pulsed Lavage in Wound Care
not applicable
Precautions for Pulsed Lavage in Wound Care (2)
- Maceration
* Pain, excessive bleeding, near exposed blood vessel
