- increase extensibility of collagen fibers of tendons and joint capsules
- increase blood flow
- increase cell metabolism
- increase collagen synthesis
- decreased joint stiffness
- decreased muscle spasm
- enhanced tendon, ligament, and muscle healing
Contraindications to Ultrasound (12)
- malignancy
- hemorrhage
- ischemia
- thrombus
- infection
- gonads
- eye
- abdomen, pelvis, lumbar areas of pregnant women
- spinal cord after laminectomy
- plastic and cemented implants (metal is ok)
- near or over electronic implants
- unknown etiology
Indications to Short Wave Diathermy (5)
- osteoarthritis
- neck/back pain
- ankle pain
- dermal wounds
- other musculoskeletal injures/pain
Contraindications to Short Wave Diathermy (10)
- loss of sensation
- electronic implants (even if device is gone but leads remain)
- surgically implanted metal
- metal in contact with the skin
- cancer
- abdomen, pelvis, lumbar areas of pregnant women
- areas of hemorrhage
- testes
- eyes
- open growth plates in children
Indications to Cold Laser (4)
- pain
- tendinopathy and epicondylitis
- wound management
- rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
Contraindications to Cold Laser (7)
- cancer
- abdomen, pelvis areas of pregnant women
- avoid direct exposure to eyes
- areas of hemorrhage
- over the thyroid gland
- directly over open wounds, unless covered with a clear protective barrier
- epileptic patients
Indications to Thermotherapy (4)
- decrease pain
- decrease muscle spasm
- osteoarthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis
Contraindications to Thermotherapy (7)
- areas of impairing heat sensation
- malignancy
- thrombophelebitis
- areas of hemorrhage
- abdomen, pelvis, lumbar areas of pregnant women
- acute inflammation/inflammatory conditions
- confused and unreliable patients
Indications to Cryotherapy (4)
- relive or decrease pain
- decrease blood flow and metabolism
- protect injured tissue
- decrease muscle spasm
