what happened in 1851-1861 (beginning)

A

1)Dakota Sioux moves to reservation
traded 24 million acres for protection and supplies

2) after 10 years it was clear the land was unsuitable and the government annuity was late
3) refused help from Reservation Agency so they resorted to eating grass to survive

1) Little Crow lead warrior brotherhoods in attacks to the agency and white settlers
2) 700 settlers killed so gov sent in reinforcements

A

1) 2000 Sioux captured, 303 sentenced to death however evidence was weak so only 38 warriors convicted
2) they were hung in 1862 while remaining sioux sent to another reservation just as unsuitable as the first
3) Little Crow captured in 1863 trying to steal crops from Minnesotan farmer

what happens in 1858 (start)

A

1) first treaty of laramie is broken when gold is discovered in Colorado
2) prospectors cross the territory which caused tension
3) miners asked for indians to be moved

A

1) Treaty of Fort Wise made: Indians would be moved to East Colorado
2) Black Kettle agreed however the Dog Soldiers stayed and started a 3 year campaign in which they killed any white settler on their land

what happened in 1864 (end)

A

1) Governor got Black Kettle to move to Sand Creek is Colonel Chivington and 700 troops could kill 130 indians
2) the tribe of mostly elderly women and children didn’t fight back however Chivington lied about that and took their body parts as trophies
3) Black Kettle escaped so gov promised reservation and compensation to survivors in fear of uprising during Civil War
4) when civil war finished they were moved to smaller reservation with no compensation

what happened between 1862 and 1866(beginning)

A

1) gold discovered in Rocky Mountains so miners used the Bozeman Trail (Sioux territory) to get there
2) Sioux and Cheyenne joined after the Sand Creek Massacre so when gov failed to stop miners they attacked travellers in 1865
3) 1866, gov was ready to listen however Red Cloud left disgusted after finding that they were building a fort to protect the trail

what happened between 1866-1868 (middle)

A

1) Ref Cloud united Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho
2) Had 3000 warriors to battle Captain Fetterman and his 80 troops
3) Scouts led Fetterman troop into trap where they were all killed so the attacked continued

A

1) US could not defeat Red Cloud easily so they promised to close Bozeman trail and promised Great Sioux reservation
2) Second Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868; Sioux burned Bozeman Trial and Red Cloud lives peacefully on new reservation
3) some warriors (Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse) didn’t trust gov so they decided to stay
