Where is Indian music played?
It is mainly performed in concert halls nowadays although it was mainly performed in temples, courts and for noblemen in the past.
Describe the Sitar.
It is a plucked lute with a large neck and tall, metal, hoop-shaped frets. It has 6-7 metal melody strings, 2 drone strings and 11-13 sympathetic strings running under 20 movable frets.
How is the Sitar played?
It is played by plucking the main strings with metal plectrum worn on index finger on the right hand.
Describe the Sarod.
It is a plucked lute with no frets but a metal-covered, tapered fingerboard. It has 4 metal melody strings, and the rest of the 21 strings are either strings tuned to drones or sympathetic strings.
How is the Sarod played?
Its main strings played with the left-hand fingernails pressing the metal strings and sliding along the metal fretless fingerboard while the righ hand strikes the strings with plectrum.
