What happens in 1858 In India?
British rule begins in India. Sometimes called the “Raj”, meaning “Kingdom” or “rule in Hindi.

Amritsar Massacre perpetrated by British soldiers in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar. Mahatma Gandhi leads campaign of non-violent civil disobedience.

Imperial conferences concerning status of India lead to Government of India Act of 1935, providing for election of entirely Indian provincial governments.
What happens in 1937?
Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehrus’s congress party forms governments in 7 of 11 provinces.

The beginning of Gandhi’s non-violent quit India movement after the British reject a deal for indian Independence in exchange for co-operation in world war 2.

The Bengal Famine, in which over 3 million people died. Historians have argued that the wartime policies of the British government contributed to the high number of deaths.

creation of the state of Bangladesh in what was previously called East Pakistan.

Gandhi declares a state of emergency: all civil rights are suspended;
groups of “subversives” are put in prison; slums are cleared without rehousing
their residents. Indira’s son, Sanjay, is responsible for the country’s population
control program, focused on sterilisation.
