Bharata Natyam
South East India, done by women
Temple dances of South India are the direct link to the Natya Shastra and to the old sage Bharata
Kuchipudi
Both a woman’s & a man’s dance
Sidhendra Yogi - founder
Dates to about the 16th century from the village of Kuchipudi in the southeastern part of India
Kathakali
Southwest India, dance only by men
Odissi
- Tribonga shape used a lot in this dance form
- three bend of the body
- Named after the areas called Orissa in Northeastern India
- childrens dance form -> adults -> now a sensuous devotional to krishna
Kathak
- Dances of Northern India and Pakistan
- known for spinning
- Call and response - dance & drummer
- The people who established this form are called the Kathaks, “itinerant bards,” who traveled and performed their storytelling dances throughout the region.
Manipuri
From the Manipur area in Northeastern India, Manipuri adopts many characteristics from neighboring regions of Nepal and China.
-Near Himalayas
Consists of two main parts
- classical form - skirts (stiff tubular skirts & both performers are women)
- folk form - both men and women, dance for the good harvest hats w/peacock hats. Tug-a-war dance
