What is the Indus Valley?
the location along the Indus River where the Indian civilization began; one of the longest rivers in the world.
What is Hinduism?
A religion developed in India; followers accept many gods as different forms of one supreme god
Who is the Siddhartha Gautama?
The founder of Buddhism who was born a prince but left in search of the cause of human suffering; a.k.a Buddha
What is Buddhism?
A religion based on the teaching of Buddha; belief that enlightenment comes from within rather than worshipping gods.
What is the Eight Fold Path?
Describes the way to end of suffering; also known as “The Middle Way”
What is Confucianism?
Ancient Chinese philosophy started by Confucius that teaches there is a proper order in family and society.
What is the caste system?
A strict division of classes where people always stay in the same caste as their parents.
What is a subcontinent?
A large landmass that extends out from a continent. India is a subcontinent that extends from Asia into the Indian Ocean.
What are monsoons?
Strong winds that blow across the region at certain times of the year.
What is silk road?
An ancient trade route between China and Europe.
What are the Himalaya Mountains?
A natural barrier that separates India’s subcontinent from the rest of the Asian continent.
What is a Citadel?
A fortress in a city.
When do the winter moonsoons blow?
From October to May. Dry Air Northeast.
When do the summer moonsoons blow?
From June to September. Moist Air from the Indian Ocean.
Where does the Ganges river flow?
From the Himalayas into the Bay of Bengal.
