Independent Groups Design Flashcards
What is the independent groups design also known as?
Independent measures/ participants/ subjects/ samples design
What does the independent groups design involve?
It involves using different participants in each condition of the experiment
What do experiments using the independent groups design typically involve?
Either a control condition and one or more experimental conditions or two (or more) experimental conditions
What may random allocation fail to do?
Produce completely equal groups. This means the groups may still have differences
What is the aim of random allocation?
To avoid conscious or sub-conscious bias from the researcher
Why is random allocation important?
It ensures that the characteristics in one group do not differ from the other. This stops results becoming confounded.
What happens if the number of participants are in short supply?
The sample won’t represent the entire population
What is the consequence of the experimental conditions being is different orders?
Nothing. They have no effect on each other
