What is an inclusive environment?
Designing Buildings and spaces which are accessible to all and if done properly will not add cost.
A place where all individuals feel valued and listened too heard also acknowledging their differences and how these differences contribute positively to the organization’s culture and business outcomes.
In the UK what is the legal basis for inclusive environments?
The equality act 2010 provides the legal framework whereby it is legal for employees to o discriminate grounds of race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, and religion or belief.
Who are we seeking to ‘include’?
Everyone and anyone to ensure people feel comfortable and confident in the work place at all times
What disabilities might need special attention when designing or refurbishing premises?
Part B - Fire Safety (Requirements, spaces, safe zones)
Part K - Protection from falling, collision, impact
Part M - Access & use of buildings - Door widths, stairs, access for disabled people

How do you ensure that your projects meet high levels of inclusive design?
An inclusive environment is created by surveyors, architects, planners, building control surveyors, engineers, access consultants and facilities managers. Ultimately, though, creating an inclusive place is in the hands of developers, landlords and service providers. It is their responsibility to ensure that their property is designed, built and operated in line with inclusive principles.
What current challenges is Covid-19 and/or Brexit bringing to Inclusive Environments
What is a team and why do we work in teams?
Covid is changing the way teams and workplaces communicate and therefore there are issue regarding the inclusion of certain individuals people may fade into the background/ feel isolated more easily.
We work in teams because people have different specialisms and skills
A team with members from diverse backgrounds will bring diverse solutions to the table, which leads to a more informed decision-making process and improved results. People learn off each other and bring different ideas and contributions
What team working theories or models are you aware of?
Bruce Tuckman’s theory of forming, storming, norming and performing 1965. The stages of development that a team goes through. Forming - polite Storming – push against boundaries Norming – resolve differences Performing – able to achieve the goals
Name some of the characteristics of an effective team.
Mutual respect, diverse, good communication, everyone contributes equally in their own way, everyone feel comfortable and able to freely express themselves.

What is your understanding of diversity?
Diversity in the workplace means that a company hires a wide range of diverse individuals from different cultural, ethnic, gender, race, ethnicity, disabilities etc.
What ethical standards does this relate to?
• Treat others with respect
What current challenges is Covid-19 and/or Brexit bringing to Diversity, Inclusion and Teamworking?
Collaboration is difficult people may feel less connected/ isolated from others. More mental health issues being reported
What are five key principles of Inclusive Design?
- People first - Places people at the heart of the design process by involving as many people as possible on the design
- Diversity & Difference - Acknowledges diversity and difference
- Choice - Inclusive design offers choice
- Flexibility - Inclusive design provides flexibility in use
- Positive experience - Inclusive design provides environments that are convenient and enjoyable to use for everyone
What does Part M of the Approved Document state:
- If provides minimum functional requirements to be met relating to accessibility.
- These include size of door opening for wheelchair access
- Size of lift.
- The size and gradient of pathways
