Explain your responsibilities relating to freeze:
Freeze the scene so that it remains in the condition in which it was found.
Explain your responsibilities relating to control:
Control people at the scene and those attempting to leave or arrive.
Explain your responsibilities relating to Preserve:
Preserve any evidence (exhibits) at the scene that may be destroyed or start to decay in some way.
What are the responsibilities of a scene guard?
The scene guards responsibilities in freezing, controlling and preserving the scene include:
UNBENT:
Unauthorized entry:
Preventing Unauthorized people entering the scene and police members including senior rank.(Allow no one access without the authority of the O/C Scence).
Notebook recording:
In notebook anyone entering the scene.
Recording Name, designation, reason for visit, time of entering and leaving scene.
Brief authorized people:
Ensure authorized people are aware of the entry and exit points and the route to be taken while on scene.
Explore and report suspicious activity:
Report any suspicious activity and record it.
No contaminating it yourself:
Avoid contaminating and interference with scene ex do not use toilet.
Think of animals:
Being aware of animals and keeping them away if possible. Ex cats contaminating scene or eating body tissue.
Understand the important information to consider when en-route to a scene.
On your way to the scene.
- obtain
- description of the suspect
- suspect vehicle (if any)
- DOT direction of travel
- description of any weapons carried
- Watch for any vehicles that my have come and gone from scene and note regos.
- plan your SFP Safe forward point.
- From a plan of your initial actions upon arrival.
- dicuss ares of responsible at scence with partners
- who will deal with possible suspects/possible victims and how.
What relevant information should be obtained from an informant on arrival at a scene?
- located the informant
- ask the informant/witness to:
- ID the victim/offender
- If Victim/offender has left DOT, what type transport if any, details of transport regos etc.
- update comms and advise who’s present, if offender has left DOT details of transport.
- ask informant/witness the location of the scene.
- if possible ask them to remain at a specific place and explain they maybe interviewed later on.
Identify what information should be included in SITREP.
Keep Comms informed of any changes at the scene and any action required.
Identify what information is required prior to taking up duties as a scene guard.
To be able to meet these responsibilities, you must first ask the O/C scene.
- who is authorized to enter the scene
- where are the scene boundaries
- where is the designated point of entry/exit
- what happened at the scene
- what route must authorized personnel take through scene.
- are there any suspects? Photos or descriptions.
Understand the definition of common approach path.
Common approach path CAP should be a path for all movements through a scene that avoid upsetting any possible routes the suspect or victim may have used.
