What actions should be taken enroute to a scene?

- Obtain descriptions of the suspect, any vehicle, direction of travel, any weapons.
- Discuss areas of responsibility with your partner.
- Plan your approach to the scene.
- Establish a Safe Forward Point (SFP)

How to establish control of the scene?

− Clear the scene of people − Freeze, Control and Preserve the scene − Set boundaries − Position Scene Guards − Carry out SITREPS − Brief supervision of actions carried out
Why is it important to work in a logical manner at a crime scene?
Successful prosecution of the offender in the High Court and for successsful resolution of the incident
What are the steps to obtaining information from the Informant/Witness
Clue: 4 bulletpoints
Locate the informant/witness and:
• Obtain the brief facts.
• Ask the informant/witness to:
identify the victim and/or the offender
give the offender’s whereabouts.
• Find out from the informant the location of the scene and the victim.
• If possible, keep the informant occupied. Ask them to remain at a specified place so that you can re-interview them later, if appropriate.
How to check the victim if there are signs of life?

Render immediate first aid
• Call for assistance from a doctor or ambulance
• Define a pathway for any medical assistance
• Note any injuries
• Don’t move the body
• Consider whether it’s possible to obtain a dying declaration
• One member must accompany the victim to hospital (to protect clothing as exhibits, give a SITREP to the dispatcher and record medical staff details)
• Record the position of the victim on the ground before removal

How to clear the scene?
Remove all people from the immediate scene.
• ensure they do not take anything or contaminate the scene
• if possible, have a police member:
− contain them in a clear area
− warn them not to discuss what has happened
− obtain their full particulars
− keep warring factions, families or gang members apart.
How to control the scene?
Monitor all movement to and from the scene
and all activity in the contained area
How to freeze the scene?
Keep the scene in its original state and nothing is to be touched or moved
How to preserve the scene?
Seize all relevant exhibits
