Why Cicero?
Sicilians had approached him as he had shown himself to be scrupulous in his time as quaestor at Lilybaeum in Sicily (75 BC)

Verres found guilty, fled Rome before end of trial, stayed in exile until his death
Significance
Cicero gains fame by defeating the leading orator of the time (Hortensius) and prosecuting an extremely wealthy nobile
