On January 15th, 2025, a ceasefire deal was reached between…

A

…Israel and Hamas. 33 hostages held by Hamas will be released—women, children, seniors—in exchange for hundreds of civilians being held by Israel (the article says prisoners, but as far as I can tell they weren’t held on charges so they were also essentially hostages). Later phases will involve the exchange of men and members of the military.

Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza strip, has killed over 45,000 Palestinians, displaced over 90% of the 2.3 million residents of Gaza, and subjected a vast majority of the population to famine. They have blocked most humanitarian aid.

Q

When did TikTok shut down and why?

A

TikTok was removed from app stores and disabled for users on January 18th, 2025. This was the evening before the law banning the app was set to take effect. TikTok was banned by federal law, with lawmakers citing security concerns regarding data collection and usage by the China-based company ByteDance. Many US users have questioned the validity of these concerns in light of US-based companies like facebook (Meta) collecting and selling the same kind of information. Many US users have also migrated to RedNote—the Chinese version of tiktok—out of apparent spite.
