Dose: 500-1000mg (2x 500mg tablets)

Pediatric dosing: 160mg/5ml and standard dosing is 15mg/kg

Contraindications/ Side effects: Filtered through the liver and cause increased damage

Type: Antibiotic

Use (What it does): Treat bacterial infections including strep throat, ear infections, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and pneumonia.

Dose (How to take):300-900 mg IVPB in 500mL-1000mL Saline bag

Contraindications/ Side effects: Watch for diarrhea and rashes with sensitivity to this medication

Given as an alternative medicine to those of the penicillin family.

Contraindications/ Side effects: May increase the blood sugar in diabetic patients because it is a glucocorticoid.

Use (What it does): Treat bronchospasms associated with COPD, Emphysema, Asthma and respiratory illnesses

Dose (How to take): Prefilled (2.5mg/mL) in a nebulizer and can mix with albuterol for a duoneb

Contraindications/ Side effects: May cause tachycardia (Increased HR), light headedness and shakes

Type: Loop Diuretic

Use (What it does): Decreases edema and swelling (typically associated with congestive heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, and other medical conditions)

Dose (How to take): 20-80mg IV slow push

Contraindications/ Side effects: May cause increased blood sugars ; muscle cramps and dehydration w/ prolonged use; may lower serum potassium levels in patient. May lead to sensitivity to the sun.

Generic name: Triamcinolone (AKA- cortisone shot)
Type: Corticosteroid
Use (What it does): Reduces the actions of chemicals in the body

Dose (How to take): 10mg IM

Contraindications/ Side effects: Watch for pain, redness, and swelling at injection site; May cause aggression, agitation and anxiety. All steroids can cause weight gain

Type: NSAID
Use (What it does): Decrease swelling and or treat moderate to severe pain

Dose (How to take):

  • ->60mg IM only
  • ->30mg IV drip

Contraindications/ Side effects: May worsen symptoms associated with kidney failure; May increase bleeding

Type: Anatacid
Use (What it does): Neutralize stomach acid (viable treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) symptoms
Dose (How to take): 30 mL PO and may be mixed with 10mL of Viscous Lidocaine to make a GI cocktail

Contraindications/ Side effects: Cannot be given via IV push because it can cause tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements)

Type: Opioid antagonist
Use (What it does): Reverses the effect of an opioid. Decreases Repertory drive and LOC due to narcotic overdose
Dose (How to take): 0.4mg slow IVP
Contraindications/ Side effects: Pushing to fast may cause vomiting or aggression

Nitrostat

A

Generic name: Nitroglycerin Sublingual Tablets
Type: Vasodilator

Use (What it does): reduces eripheral vascular resistance and reduces the workload on the heart; Given for angina(chest pain); relieves ischemic chest pain–associated with heart attacks

Dose (How to take): 1 sublingual tablet (0.4mg) every 5 minutes until patient is either pain free or a maximum of 3 doses

Contraindications/ Side effects: May decrease the pulse rate and blood pressure. IV must be established before administering. Stop if patient becomes hypotensive

Use (What it does): Anti-inflammatory medication associated with respiratory illnesss such as Asthma and COPD. Decrease systemic swelling in allergic reactions

Dose (How to take): 125mg IM or Slow IV Push

Contraindications/ Side effects: Can increase blood sugar in diabetic patients

Generic name: (Ampicillin Sodium/ Sulbactam Sodium)
Type: Penicillin Family
Use (What it does): treats bacterial infections

Dose (How to take): 1.5-3g IVPB

Contraindications/ Side effects: (Painful as a shot) Contraindicated in patients diagnosed with Mononucleosis. Use cautiously in patients who have kidney disease or decreased renal function.

Type: Local anesthetic
Use (What it does): Treats pain in the mouth, throat or esophagus.
Dose (How to take): Stocked in 100mL bottles but given
in a 10mL dose PO.
Can be given with 30mL of Maalox to
make GI cocktail for GERD treatment
Contraindications/ Side effects: ONLY GIVEN ORALLY. MAY CAUSE NUMBING OF LIPS, MOUTH AND TONGUE.
