Imunity Flashcards
What is phagocytosis?
When a phagocyte engulfs and digests a pathogen
What is a phagocyte?
A white blood cell that engulfs and digests pathogens
What is a pathogen?
A microbe that causes diseases
What is a lymphocyte?
A white blood cell that produced antibodies
What are the 4 types of pathogen?
Bacteria, virus, fungi, protists
Which microbes cause rose black spot in plants?
Fungi
What do antibodies do?
Target specific pathogens and attach to their antigens
Which microbes cause malaria?
Protists
Which microbes cause Salmonella and gonorrhoea?
Bacteria
Which microbes cause measles, HIV and Aids?
Viruses
Which microbes causes TMV (Tobacco Mosaic Virus)
Virus
What are the 2 symptoms of measles?
Fever, rash
What are the symptoms of HIV?
Flu-like illness. Attacks the immune system.
What is AIDS?
The bodies response HIV
What are the symptoms of TMV (Tobacco Mosaic Virus) in plants
A mosaic pattern of discolouration which slows down photosynthesis.
What are the symptoms of Salmonella?
Fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps.
What causes salmonella?
Eating raw meat such as chicken and eggs.
What are the symptoms of gonorrhoea
Thick yellow / green discharge from vagina or penis and pain in urination.
What are the symptoms of plant bacterial diseases?
Causes galls to grow (a mass of unspecialised cells)
What are the symptoms of rose black spot in plants?
Black spots on the leaves. This slows down photosynthesis due to lack of chlorophyll
What are the symptoms of malaria?
Damages blood and liver cells. Causes fever and shakes.
Which organism transmits malaria?
A mosquito
What is a vector?
Something that transfers diseases from one organism to another.
