Impulse control therapy Flashcards
Goal
is not to eliminate the behaviour

Main proposition
when treatment resolves the Feeling State, the compulsive urge will be eliminated
Cognitive change
rationalizations and distorted thinking that people have used to justify their out-of-control behaviour begin to disappear
Behavioural change
destructive behaviours usually disappear and the person automatically begins to seek more appropriate ways to obtain the desired feeling
Step 1
aspect of the behaviour which produces the
most intense feelings will be identified
Step 2
intense positive feeling along with any physical sensations created associated with the act will be identified
Positive Feelings Scale
a 0 to 10 scale with 10 being the most intense positive feeling used to rate positive feelings experienced in feeling state
Step 3
Client asked re-create feeling state in their brain while preforming EDMR exercises
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR)
the individual recalls problem behaviour or
memories while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus
External stimuli used in EDMR
-therapist directed lateral eye movements (most common)
-hand-tapping
-audio stimulation
Step 4
undertake reflections on the therapy between sessions, then return to re-evaluate their feeling-state in relation to the problematic behaviour using the positive feeling scale
Step 5
Continue the revaluation and processing in further sessions until the person’s drive toward the compulsive behaviour has been
eliminated and the behaviour has changed
