Impulse and Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum?
Is a quantity that determines how much force you have to apply to stop a moving object. Any object that has mass and velocity has a momentum
Momentum equation?
p=mv, momentum=mass x velocity
What is impulse?
A force applied to an object for a certain period of time.
Impulse equation?
J=F x delta t, Impulse=Force x change in time.
Impulse Momentum Theorem
Impulse = Change in momentum
Impulse momentum theorem equation
F x delta t = m(vf-vi)
System
A defined collection of objects
Closed system
A collection of objects that does not gain or lose mass.
Open system
A collection of objects that does gain or lose mass.
Isolated system
When the net external force on a closed system is zero.
Law of conversation of momentum.
States that the momentum of any closed, isolated system does not change. Pf=Pi
Law of conversation of momentum equation
m1v1i+m2v2i=m1v1f+m2v2f
Inelastic collision
Momentum (not conserved), kinetic energy is lost.
Elastic collision
momentum (conserved)
Recoil
A sudden backward force.
