Improvement in food resources Flashcards
Cropping pattern
Food supplies carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals all of which we require for body development, growth and health.
Name the major food sources
plants and animals
Why is it necessary to improve food sources?
Our population is growing and we need more grains but, India is already intensively cultivated. So there is no scope for increasing land under cultivation. It is therefore necessary to improve production efficiency of both crops and livestock.
What do you mean by sustainable agriculture?
It is the farming or ranching practice that protects the environment, improves the quality of life of people and communities and ensures long term sustainability in agricultural economy
It prioritizes the use of natural and renewable resources over synthetic inputs
define ‘photo period’
Photo period refers to duration of exposure to sunlight required by a plant for growth and flowering
differentiate between Kharif and rabi crops
The crops which are grown in rainy season are called kharif crops
e.g.: Paddy, maize, millet, pigeon pea etc.
The cropes which are grown in winter season are called Rabi crops
e.g; wheat, gram, pea, mustrad, linseed
Mention the aim of the following
a) green revolution
b) white revolution
c) blue revolution
d) yellow revolution
e) golden revolution
a) green revolution aims to increase the food grain production
b) It aims to increase the milk production
c) Blue revolution aims to increase the production of fish
d) Yellow revolution aims at increase in oil production
e) It aims at increasing the production of pulses
define the following
a) Hybridisation
b) Genetically modified crops
a) hybridisation refers to crossing between dissimilar plants. This maybe intervarietal, interspecific or intergeneric
b) It is the one which is formed through introduction of specific genes from other sources
what is artificial hybridisation?
Artificial hybridisation is the production of hybrids by ‘’ cross pollinating’’ two separate plants under controlled conditions.
mention the desirable characteristics of a crop
- Higher yield
- improved quality
- resistence to biotic and abiotic factors
- Change in maturity duration
- wider adaptability
- desirable agronomic characteristics
What are the desirable agronomic characteristics
Development of crops with desirable agronomic charateristics will help in setting higher production
Tallness and profuse branchimg are the desirable characterisics of fodder crops. whereas dwarfness is seen as the desirable agronomic characteristic for cereals so that less nutrients will be consumed by them.Dwarf varieties of cereals protect them from logging.
