What is the meaning of Desquamation?
Shedding of dead cells from the outer layer of the skin.
What is the meaning of exfoliation?
Removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
what are the benefits of exfoliation?
- Dead skin cells, grease and debris are removed from the surface of the skin.
- Fresh new cells are exposed, improving the appearance of skin.
- Moisturisers and lotions are more easily absorbed into the skin.
- Blood circulation improves, so oxygen and nutrients come to the skin cells, improving skin colour.
- Hyperpigmentation is improved by appearance.
What are the contra-indications for exfoliation?
- If your client has highly sensitive skin.
- A skin disorder such as damaged broken veins in the area of treatment.
- Pustular, blemished skin.
Give me some examples of exfoliation
- Natural acids such as (AHA’S)
- Pore Grains
- Clay Exfoliants
- Mechanical Exfoliation
Describe the Natural acid exfoliant
- Come from fruits, sugar canes and milk.
- They are applied to the skin as a face mask.
- The natural acids dissolve the dead surface cells and stimulate circulation in the underlying skin.
- The AHA’S may be combined with enzymes which come from fruits to help remove dead surface skin cells to achieve the best effect.
- Warn your client that this face mask will cause a slight stinging sensation and a tightening effect as the mask sets.
Describe Pore grain exfoliant
- A base of cream containing tiny spheres of polished plastic and is gently massaged over the skin’s surface.
Describe Clay exfoliants
- They have a clay base which is applied like a face mask.
- As it dries, the clay absorbs the dead skin cells and sebum.
- the mask is then gently stroked away using the pads of the fingers.
Describe Mechanical exfoliation
- Softens and cleanses the skin.
- Dead skin cells and sebum are removed.
- The circular action increases the cleansing action of exfoliation.
What is the Steam Treatment?
Producing a warming effect on the skin to achieve cleansing and stimulation.

What is the meaning of Contra-actions?
A Reaction to the treatment , which occurs during or shortly after the treatment.
What are the Contra-actions to steaming?
- Scalding
- Discomfort
- Over stimulation of the skin
