A

Deterrence/prevention - prisons don’t deter
Incapacitation (public protection) - not all prisoners are dangerous, people reoffend
Retribution (punishment) - loss of freedom, no material goods (individuality and self expression), deprivation relationships, fear (other violent people), impact on future job prospects
Reform and rehabilitation - does it work?
