Q

What are the advantages of using addition cured silicones for impressions

A

1, Accurate

  1. Suffers little distortion over time
  2. Range of viscosities
  3. Can be withdrawn from large undercuts suffering no plastic deformation
  4. No taste

7
Q

What happens to impression material as we increase the filler content

A

The dimensional stability and strength increase BUT the accuracy and flowabilty decrease

Q

How do we take an impression an addition cured silicone gun

A
  1. . the light-bodied silicone is placed around the prepared tooth without any air voids. include the adjacent teeth
  2. Seat a impression tray with heavy bodied silicone into the mouth and wait for it to set

9
Q

Why do we need to include the adjacent teeth when applying the light bodied silicone

A

That is where the contact point will be

11
Q

What can we do if we have concerns that gingival may ruin the impression

A

We can temporarily retract the gingival cuff to allow entry of impression material into the gingival crevice

14
Q

How is a gingival retraction cord inserted into the mouth

A
  1. The cord is placed firmly into the gingival crevice of the tooth all the way round.
  2. Firm pressure is required to do this.
  3. Pack firmly 360degrees round the tooth

15
Q

How do we decide what size cord to use when carrying out gingival retraction

A

The gingival condition and the depth of the sulcus will determine the size of the cord used.

16
Q

What is an alternative to using gingival retraction cords

A

Astringent retraction paste

Electro surgery

17
Q

What is our aim when we use astringent retraction paste

A

To temporarily displace the marginal gingiva in healthy periodontium to provide a dry sulcus

18
Q

When might we need to achieve a dry sulcus?

A
  1. For impressions
  2. Provision of temporary restorations
  3. Cementation of restoration
  4. Class II and V restorations
19
Q

What are the contraindications of Astringent retraction paste

A
  1. Diseased periodontium
  2. Open furcations
  3. Exposed bone
20
Q

What are the components of Astringent retraction paste

A

Acidic paste made up of 15% aluminium chloride

21
Q

What is the action of Astringent retraction paste

A

Haemostatic – compression of tissues and astringent action of aluminium chloride.

22
Q

How do we use the Astringent retraction paste

A
  1. Place 3M ESPE Astringent Retraction Paste into a composite dispenser,
  2. Place the tip of the capsule into the sulcus.
  3. While placing the tip into the sulcus the tissue is mechanically retracted from the tooth.
  4. Extrude retraction paste slowly while going slowly around the prepared tooth.
  5. Leave the paste for at least two minutes.
  6. Completely remove astringent retraction paste with air-water spray and suction.
23
Q

What can happen if we leave the astringent on for too long

A

A too long application of the paste may harm the soft tissue.

24
Q

What are the key benefits of using Astringent retraction paste

A
  1. Easy sulcus access due to fine capsule tip
  2. Effectively opens the sulcus
  3. Enables a clean, dry sulcus area and Long lasting haemostats
  4. Application is with common composite dispenser
  5. Easier and quicker to do than just retraction cord
  6. lower risk of bleeding
25
Q

What is electro surgery

A

Removal of gingival tissue to expose clear preparation margins
