Important Terms and Forces Flashcards
A force of the Earth on an object due to its mass
Weight
A force that resists movement because of contact between surfaces
Friction
A non-contact force that acts between two masses
Gravity
A force between two magnets, or a magnet and magnetic material
Magnetic Force
The force on an object moving through the air that causes it to slow down (A.K.A Drag).
Air resistance
To squash into a smaller object
Compress
The force acting on an object moving through the air or water that causes it to slow down.
Drag Force
The amount by which an object gets longer when a force is applied.
Extension
The law that states that if you double the force on an object the extension will double.
Hooke’s Law
The amount of matter something is made up of.
Mass
The unit of force.
Newtons (N)
A piece of equipment used to measure weight in newtons.
Newton Meter
The support force provided by a solid surface like a floor.
Reaction
Any forces that act to slow down an object.
Resistive forces
Shaped to reduce resistance to motion from air or water.
Streamlined.
