Important scientists and Vocabulary Words Flashcards
Spontaneous generation
Life came from non-living matter
Biogenesis
Life can only come from other life
When was Cell Theory made
1837
What is Cell theory
All life is made of cells, Cells are the basic unit of structure and function of life. New cells come from existing cells
What does Koch’s postulate do
How we identify what causes diseases.
Steps of Koch’s postulate
Step 1 the microorganism must be present in every case of the disease, 2nd step is to isolate the bacteria and grow it in a culture. 3rd step is to put the disease in a mouse or other animal. 4th step re-isolate the disease and make sure its the same as before.
Francesco Redi
Italian scientist disproved that maggots would spontaneously generate in 1668.
Louis Pasteur
French Chemist discovered heat would kill bacteria (pasteurization) in the 1850s and 1860s. Created the first lab vaccine and did the curved flask experiment disproving spontaneous generation
Who made Cell Theory
Matthias Scheiden and Theodor Schwann
Alexander Flemming
First antibiotic, penicillin, type of fungi that can be used to protect against bacteria
2 Types of Microscopes
Light Microscope and Electron Microscope
How does the light microscope work
through using visible light and a system of lenses
What are the two types of electron microscopes
Scanning microscope and the Transmission microsope
How does the Scanning microscope work
through pencil-like beams that scan over the large part of a specimen
How does the Transmission microscope work
Beams of electrons pass through thin slices of the specimen
