PKU is a rare genetic condition that is congenital.
It is due to a mutation in the the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase which breaks down the amino acid phenylalanine commonly found in meat, fish, milk cheese and eggs. Without the function of this enzyme to remove the amino acid when its not being used to build proteins then it can accumulate in the blood and brain causing brain and nervous system damage, epilepsy, learning and behavioral difficulties. PKU is treated with a special low protein diet and as long as it is found early enough then mamy of the symptoms can be prevented.
