Important Indians/Arabians/Contemporarian-ishs. Flashcards
Brahmaguptra
Indian Mathematics; wrote a book that contained all the math known at that time.
Al-Khowarizmi
His era believed that areas and volumes had to be non-negative.
Also that one couldn’t add an area to a volume.
Wrote two really important books!
1) Thus Says Algorithmi
2) All About Al-Gebra Al Mutada
Al-Khowarizmi: Thus Says Algorithmi
Book that collected everything we know in arithmetic.
We get “algorithm” from this.
Al-Khowarizmi: All About Al-Gebra Al Mutada
Book on how to solve linear and quadratic systems of equations.
Al Khayammi (Omar Kayam) 1000AD
Solved the cubic equation!
(13 times, because he wasn’t allowed negative numbers)
(think cubic)
Al Samawal
(Jewish)
Huge departure from geometric thinking!
Studied polynomials of all order (including negatives).
Did algebra with negative numbers.
(think Samuel from biblical times, big change)
Al Baghdadi
Philosophically interesting.
Proved that for every two rational numbers, there’s an irrational one in between.
