1839
Brown’s Schoolhouse renamed Union Institute
1852
Union Institute renamed Normal College and chartered for training of teachers
1856
Normal College becomes affiliated with the Methodist Church
1878
The first women (the Giles sisters) graduated from Trinity College
1880
The first foreign student, a Chinese man named Charlie Soong (of the Soong Dynasty) is accepted
1885
The Giles sisters become the first women to receive Masters Degrees from Trinity
1887
Yale Blue is adopted as the school color b/c of President John F. Crowell
1892
Trinity College moves to Durham thanks to Washington Duke and Julian Carr’s donations; Blackwell Park becomes East Campus
1903
The Bassett Affair: John Spencer Basset wins academic freedom.
1924
James B. Duke organizes $40 million Duke Endowment: Trinity College becomes the nucleus of Duke University
1925-1927
East Campus is rebuilt with the addition of 11 Georgian-style buildings designed by Horace Trumbauer firm in Philadelphia.
1927-1932
West Campus built with Neo-Gothic architecture, also by Horace Trumbauer. Chief designer was black man Julien F. Abele.
1930
Duke University Woman’s College is established: East Campus is the Woman’s College.
1939
Sarah P. Duke gardens are dedicated
1968
1,500 students and faculty hold vigil in front of chapel to honor Dr. King and focus on minority issues on campus.
1969
African-American students take over the Allen Building, demand among other things a Black Studies curriculum
1972
Woman’s College and Trinity College merge to become co-ed Trinity College of A&S. Women and men both live on East and West Campus.
1982
Bryan Center opens.
1983
Fuqua School and Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture dedicated; Women’s Studies Program begins.
1991
Men’s basketball wins first title. School of Forestry and Environmental Studies + Marine Lab –> School of Environment opens.
1992
Men’s basketball wins second title. Perkins Library marks 4 millionth volume.
1993
Nannerl O. Keohane succeeds H. Keith Brodie as Duke President –> first woman.
1994
Opening of Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy and LSRC
