Important Cranial pathways and ganglion- Parasympathetic Flashcards
CN 3: Oculomotor
CN 3 travels out of sup orbital fissure and heads to ciliary ganglion, where parasympathetic fibers synapse and send out short ciliary nerves going to sphincter pupilae and ciliary muscle
CN 7 Facial
1st pathway: greater petrossal (CN 7) going towards pterogopalatine ganglion, hitches a ride from deep petrosal (sympathetic coming from cervical ganglion). Parasympathetic fibers synapse there. Then they catch a ride of zygomatic and head to lacrimal glands and nose
2nd Pathway: Chorda typani (CN 7) heading toward mouth area hitches a ride with CN 5 V3 lingual nerve. Chorda typani synapses at submandibular ganglion, then sending fibers to submandibular and sublingual glands….Note about this pathway: SVA from anterior two thirds of tongue also traveling in chorda typani
CN 9: Glossopharyngeal
GLOAP
Glossopharyngeal nerve uses lesser petrosal nerve to the otic ganglion– then auriculotemporal (CN 5 V3) to the parotid gland
