Importance of ATP Flashcards
Synth in mitochondria process part 1
Energy released in ETS used to pump protons (H+) from mitochondrial matrix into a compartment between the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes.
Synth in mitochondria process part 2
The protons accumulate so that a steep conc grad develops between the compartment and the matrix.
Synth in mitochondria process part 3
Inner membrane is impermeable to protons so they diffuse back into the matrix via chemiosmotic channels through the stalked particle.
Synth in mitochondria process part 4
Energy associated w/ the proton movement through the particle drives ATP synth. Phosphorylation of ADP is catalysed by ATP synthase in the bulbous end of the stalked particle.
Synth in photosynthesis part 1
Proton pump across thylakoid membrane driven by energy from excited electrons as they pass through ETS.
Synth in photosynthesis part 2
Protons accumulate in thylakoid compartment, forming a conc grad.
Synth in photosynthesis part 3
They diffuse back into stroma through chemiosmotic channels which are formed by ATP synthase enzyme complex. As they pass through, the enzyme complex convs ADP and Pi into ATP.
