Implementing SDGs Flashcards
COP21
21st Conference of Parties
legally binding and universal agreement on climate change
aim of 2 degrees Celsius global warming
derived from SDGs
Tipping Points
critical threshold where a small change of conditions results in significant change of the system
reversible or irreversible
examples: melting of polar ice
NDC + Sector specific goals
Countries define Nationally determined contributions (NDC) to contribute to the COP21 goals. These are often defined in sector specific goals for greenhouse gas (e.g. CO2) emissions e.g. energy, industry , building, transport, agriculture
Fair Share Principle
idea that countries should contribute to the global effort to address climate change based on their historical responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions and their capacity to take action. developed countries, which have historically contributed the most to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, bear a greater responsibility for addressing climate change
Net-Zero
Planet boundries
9 boundaries with a safe operating space
Crossing the boundaries could cause irreversible environmental changes
Climate change
freshwater change
ozone depletion
atmospheric aerosol loading
ocean acidification
biogeochemical flows
novel entities
land-system change
biosphere integrity
Novel entities
Pollution with synthetic substances e.g. microplastics, break / tire dust
