Implants Flashcards
Dental implants
Are titanium screws that are surgically placed inside the bone.
They are used to replace missing teeth
Surgical stent
Acts as a guide during surgery to place the implant in the ideal location and at a precise angle
It’s made of clear acrylic with metal cylinders that are hollow and will allow the implant to be screwed into them
Endosteal implants
Surgically placed into the bone and will osseointergrate
Osseointigrate
Process in which the living jawbone naturally grows around the implanted dental supports
Periodontal disease
A site specific infection that attack’s and affects the bone that surrounds the teeth and the tissues of the periodontium.
There are two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis
Gingivitis
Inflammation of the gingival tissues induced by bacteria and plaque that has stuck to the tooth
Gingiva
Commonly referred to as the gums. This tissue covers the alveolar bone of the jaw that surrounds the neck of the teeth
Epithelial attachment
Tissue at the base of the sulcus where the gingiva attaches to the tooth
Sulcus
The space between the tooth and the free gingiva
Periodontal ligaments
Dense connective fibers that Connect to the cementum with the alveolar bone
Plaque
Harmful bacteria increase in mass and thickness until it forms a soft deposit of bacteria that covers the tooth
Calculus
Tartar.
Calcified deposits in the teeth that are formed by the continuous presence of dental plaque
Prophylaxis
Complete removal of calculus, plaque, and stain from the supragingival and subgingival tooth surfaces
Subgingival
Below the gingival tissue
Supragingival
Above the gingival tissue
Coronal polishing
Done by the DA
Polishing if tooth surface
Ultrasonic scaler
Rapid calculus remover
Complex extraction
When a conditions require additional skill and knowledge and instrumentation to remove a tooth
Impacted tooth
Is a tooth that has not erupted
Soft tissue impaction
Indicates the tooth is under the gingival tissue
Hard tissue impaction
Indicated that the tooth is partially or totally covered by tissue and bone
Biopsy
Where tissue is removed and examined to find cancerous lesions in the oral cavity
