Implants 2 Flashcards
what is peri-implantitis
a pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants,
characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant mucosa and progressive loss of supporting bone.
describe implant health
- no inflammation
- absence of bone loss
- expect increased probing depths, up to 5mm
- no increase in probing depths compared to last exam
how should implants be periodontally assessed
dont use BPE or BPE probe
use UNC15 or PCP probe
at least 4 points around implant should be assessed - ideally 6
4 main predisposing factors for peri-implant disease
smoking
poor plaque control
history of severe periodontitis
no regular, supportive peri-implant care
name 4 reasons why a patient may have implants
hypodontia
trauma
tumour resection
perio related tooth loss
name a post placement problem
- surgical
- restorative
- biological
- administrative
- problems in planning or placement
- problems with restoration or function
- peri implant mucositis or peri implantitis
- patient unhappy with outcome
GDP role in implants
- who to refer patient to
- information resource
- routine care
- smoking cessation
- aftercare and maintenance
definition of peri implant mucositis
inflammatory lesion of the soft tissues surrounding an implant in the absence of continuing marginal bone loss
signs of peri implant mucositis
erythema
swelling
BOP +/- suppuration
possible increased probing depths
NO associated bone loss
signs of peri implantitis
swelling and erythema
PPDs >=6mm
bone levels >=3mm apical to most coronal part of intraosseous part of implant
recession
BOP +/- suppuration
how prevalent is peri implant mucositis and peri implantitis in implant patients
mucositis - 43%
implantitis - 22%
