Monroe Doctrine
The document that the U.S. decreed in 1823 by John Quincy Adams that initial reason was to keep European countries out of the Western Hemisphere. It said that any European intervention in the Western Hemisphere would be seen as an act of aggression. But with Roosevelt, it changed, the U.S. would protect Latin American Countries economically.
Anti-Imperialst League
A group of US citizens opposed to US imperialism for various reasons. High profile members include Mark Twain, Andrew Carnegie, and Samuel Gompers.
De Lome Letter
The letter that the Spanish-American Ambassador sent to another Spain official that was leaked in Cuba that called President McKinley a weak and pondering politician.
Open Door Policy
Encouraged people countries to freely trade within an area or region without a specific country gaining control of said region or area. This was shown in China with the trade that occurred there in the early 20th century.
Boxer Rebellion
The rebellion that consisted of Chinese men who strongly resisted the inhabitants of foreigners in China.
Root-Takahira Agreement
Between the U.S. that recognized Japan’s special interest in China, prevented a potential war.
Roosevelt Corollary
The act that basically said that the U.S. would help deal with the foreign economic affairs of the Latin American countries to prevent them from intervening in the Western Hemisphere.
Foraker Act
U.S. decreed act that Established civilian government in Puerto Rico
Teller Amendment
The amendment written up by conservatives basically saying that when we intervened in Cuba to try and get rid of Spain, we wouldn’t annex spain afterwards.
Platt Amendment
Passed in 1901 that stated 7 conditions in which U.S. troops would withdraw out of Cuba at the end of the Spanish-American war.
