The process of acquiring colonies through military conquest, occupation and exploitation.
New Imperialism
After the Berlin Conference
Based more on gaining land (Territorial Conquest) and the (4 c’s), Christianity, Commerce, Conquest and Civilisation
- political control by force
Old Imperialism
focused mainly on the system of trade
Social Darwinism
The theory that groups and individuals are subject to the same Darwinism laws of natural selection
- eurocentrism
- ‘White mans Burden’
Capitalism
private or corporate ownership of capital goods
- controlled by the natural laws such as supply and demand
Communism
A totalitarian system of government advocating the elimination of private property
(power over every aspect of life)
Nationalism
Feeling of strong loyalty towards a nation
- positive and negative (eurocentrism)
Racism
The belief that some races are superior to others and therefore should have superior rights and privileges.

Results Of Imperialism
Spread of Language, culture, government control, religion, civilisation e.g. communications, education, Trade/economy, Technology
Slavery, Death, famine, violence and ‘small wars’
Cause of imperialism
The industrial revolution created a need for raw materials which then led to the want for power and dominance over neighbours

DEMOCRACY
Political system in which, generally, all adult citizens have the right to vote
LIBERALISM
rights of the individual
WELFARISM
regulates owning and operating factors of production
