when you inherit an official position by family (heir)
Meritocracy
when you inherit an official position through merit
Civil Service Exam
an exam taken by candidates for the Chinese government. Candidates took it in the span of about 16-24 hours while in a room with little food and a toilet. Song Dynasty.
Watertight Compartments
compartments that are waterproof
Paddlewheel Boat
They were used as tugs and as passenger river ships
Segmented Arch Bridge
made out of multiple arches per bridge, stronger and wider.
Champa Rice
A species of rice that only takes 2 months to grow - significant because the faster the rice grows, the more convenient it is to the people who buy it
Gunpowder
Invented by the Chinese alchemists in the Tang dynasty from saltpeter, it was made to create immortality.
Inoculation
a type of vaccine/medicine given to a patient by grinding up a scab and injecting it into the patient. - Used for Medicine (help people survive).
Silk Road
a network/road of trade that ran through central asia. - Used for trade (helped people living in China get crops, food, silk, ect.)
Marco Polo
studied China for a long time and other places. He recorded information and had it made into a book. ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS EXPLORERS.
Zheng He
a very strict person who launched a huge fleet of ships to India. Taken prisoner by the Chinese, later served in the Chinese army.
Song Dynasty
had a civil service exam, more advanced technology. Used fertilizer to grow larger crops, and chain pumps. Improved plow and harrows were used to level plowed ground.
Yuan Dynasty
tolerated/encouraged foreigners in China because they helped they were forigeners
