Impact On Civilians Flashcards
Requistioning - King needed food
And supplies ( and ships ) for their armies
Food and fodder was requistioned ( bought by force )
By civilians .This was called purveyance
Civilians were meant to be paid a fair price if requistioned but this
Was often not the case or were given IOU’s - promises to pay at a later date
Civilians suffered on two accounts from requistioning -
They had less food and supplies for their own use.
They were out of pocket to the Crown
Benefits of warfare on civilians
Pay was better in the army than pay for work on the farm; the demand for supplies , weapons amd fortifications and so on boosted industry and gave employment
Feudal duties - recruitment .The king forced civilians
To fight in the army.Desertion amd refusal was common.
Civilians increasingly chose to pay scutage instead of going to war .
Fighting meant time away from family and home , as well as great risk of death and injury
Recruits were expected to provide their own equipmwnt and provisions for 40 days .
Impact of warfare on civilians
Sieges involved cutting off supplies of food and water from towns and cities , increasingly bombarding them, fording them to surrender. This caused suffering for the community.
Raids on communities caused severe suffering.Sometimes the enemy was paid to go away.
Plunder was common.Gave the army supplies and starved the enemy
Ransom could be demanded from enemy communities for protection and from captives in order to secure their release
