Decline of Europe, Rise of America - USA share of world trade increases dramatically, worlds economic super power

A

Continuity - GB and F keep their empires and continue colonial polices, nationalism still strong
Fall of Imperial monarchy and rise of republicanism - loss of faith in monarchy, rise of radical fascist parties in G and I, communism in R (1917 revolutions)
Political map of Europe redrawn - balance of power lost, R, G and AH lose their empires and successor states emerge - unstable ethnic rivalry
League of Nations is formed - reform international relations, Wilsons 14 point programme

What was the social impact of war?

A

Human cost of war - ‘lost’ generation, left ‘dependants’ who had to be supported by state pension, Spanish flu left 15million dead, 8million dead soldiers
Improved position of trade unions and workers - could seek greater social and political power, improved pay and conditions, GB - social insurance benefits
Improved social status of women - were bought into work during war, received vote in GB, improved their confidence and their voice
