What was the impact on food shortages?
-May 1942->food shortages reduced the weekly bread and meat ration->but the rationing book did not guarantee that people would get food
-some foods disappeared into the ‘Black market’ which was too expensive for many people to buy from
What ages of women in 1943 had to register for work?
17-45
What were the impact of bombings?
-there were bomber attacks on German cities and one attack in Hamburg in July 1943->50,000 German civilians died in one week
What did civilians have to do?
-cut back on heating
-work long hours
-recycle their rubbish
Which groups of people were most affected by war?
-women because they had to go back to work
-more women were sent to work and country areas had to take evacuees from the cities
How did the German experience of war change from 1942 onwards?
morale fell due to the attack on Russia stalling
-standard of living fell
Why was censorship introduced?
-Goebbels increased censorship and he tried to get people to support the war by involving them in it by asking them to make sacrifices
-they donated 1.5 million fur coats to help clothe the German army in Russia
-in 1942 all places of entertainment were closed except cinemas as Goebbels needed these to show propaganda films
Why did Hitler distance himself from the people of Germany?
-the Final Solution began in 1942
-from 1942 Albert Speer was in charge of Germany’s war economy and all effort was focused on the weapon industries
What was the impact on women?
-women because they had to go back to work and work for long hours and care for their children/family ->big adjustment from them not working for years->in 1943 women ages 17-45 had to register for work->women went to work because they needed to help with the war effort because men were sent to the army->Nazis had to compromise their values for women
What was the impact on children?
-children->had to be drafted->Hitler’s aims succeeded because he was training the Hitler Youth to be soldiers and then as war hit they were prepared and sent to war->a lot of young people forced into war
How was Nazi policy impacted by the outbreak of war?
-they had to focus on winning the war rather than indoctrinating people
-Poland’s Jewish population was in the millions->there were more Jews Germany had to persecute since taking control of Poland and they needed a bigger plan->more people under Nazi control
How did the Nazis have to compromise on their principles during the war?
-they had to increase censorship, by 1942 all places of entertainment were closed besides cinemas because they could be used to show propaganda films
What were the early years of the war like?
-were characterised by the method and speed of the war (they advanced very quickly to give other countries no time to prepare)
