Despite the New Deal providing more jobs for black Americans, they were given the worst jobs and were the ‘last to be hired and the first to be fired’. Many of those in Northern states also petitioned to fire all black employees as they felt as though they took all the jobs (xenophobia). However, after 3 years of serving the country the Tuskegee Airmen’s work had increase positive public attitudes towards black Americans.

Where Native Americans were looked over, a specific group named the Navajo made a large contribution to the war effort. Therefore, Native Americans in general were highlighted as an ethnic group.

Despite being a small ethnic minority, the Navajos (Native American people of the Southwestern US) contribute heavily in the war effort through working as code talkers/ communication soldiers.

By the end of the war, 420 Navajo men out of 50,000 Navajo people were code talkers, serving in the Pacific war zone from 1942 to 1945.
How far were Native Americans impacted by WW2?
This was a very significant contribution to the war seeing as the Navajo language was so complex tat the Japanese couldn’t crack the communications made between them (helping save thousands). However, this effort wasn’t heavily recognised.

There was an increase in racial attacks towards Hispanic Americans.

Specifically, Mexican American faced a lot of racial discrimination. For example, the Zoot Suit Riots.
How did the impact of WW2 and the New Deal cause change in the lives of Hispanic Americans?
The Zoot Suit Riots occurred on the 3rd of June 1943. It began in LA when white sailors claimed to be attacked by a Mexican American wearing a ‘zoot suit’ (a new fashion suit associated with ethnic minorities), this led to 50 sailors stripping anyone in a zoot soot around LA. Riots peaked on June 7 when sailors beat up Mexican Americans in zoot suits but ended on the 8th when they were confined to their barracks.
How far were Hispanic Americans impacted by WW2?
Due to racial tensions between white Americans and Hispanic Americans, those wearing zoot suits were racially targeted. Elanor Roosevelt caused an uproar by highlighting how the riots were racially motivated attacks against Mexican Americans in writing to the female head of the California State Chamber of Commerce.
