Q

Overall how successfully did Henry set himself apart from his father?

?/6

A

On the surface much had changed with symbolic gestures, and different, more relaxed ethos and intent on war. Also marraige to Catherine helped in his war aims.

However as at first kept court very similar, only small changes in how things run - potantial for more (Wolsey Chief Minister 1514)

Q

What evidence is there that Henry failed in gaining war and glory between 1509-14?

A
  1. Ministers unsupportive and skilled at inaction
    1. Archbishop Warham and Bishop Fox tricked Henry into renewing truce with France in 1510
  2. Ferdinand unreliable
  3. Maximilian unreliable
    1. Could both be bribed by French
  4. 1512 war with France - English troops used as pawns by Ferdninand so could seize lands in Pyrenees
    1. Lost money, infested and mutinous and achieved nothing
  5. 1513 through Callais difficult because France realised England could achieve little if they avaoided full battle
  6. Therouanne unimportant, given to Max and burned
  7. Tournai not economically important
  8. 1512-13 campaign exhausted English finances - pursue peace not war in 1514
  9. French to pay arrears of French pension, Herny kept land, and sister to marry Louis XII aged 52
    1. Peanuts compared to cost and Mary lost to marriage market

Q

Overall was Henry successful in gaining war and glory?

A

In practical terms, no - he was too inexperienced and easily manipulated by greeater powers.

However he certainly felt and made out to be glorious, although this was short-lived

Q

Overall how successful was Henry in securing his succession?

?/6

A

Evidence of sucess and failure. Woudl have wanted a male heir 5 years into rule but still expected one would come, so not that significant.

Q

Overall how successful was Henry in achieving his aims between 1509-14?

A

Ostensibly very - glory from warfare and semed complete antithesis of his father. No son but a wife and no more Edmund de la Pole (been away in France anyway so likely not to have had as much of a chance)

However war in practical terms was a failure, and did not bode well for the future. Government also quite like his father’s although did bode well for the future with the rise of men such as Wolsey (who was more powerful than Archbishop Warham when papal legate in 1518)

Henry all about image anyway, so slightly more a success than a failure
