Impact of diabetes and physical activity on cardiovascular ageing and outcome- Barry Flashcards
Research studies undertaken by our group……..
The Effect of Fasting Glucose Levels on Arterial Stiffness
Objective:
To determine the relationship between
fasting blood glucose levels and aortic PWV
Methods:
1,282 individuals
Aged 18-87
*15 minutes supine rest
*Peripheral BP
–brachial artery
*Central BP, augmentation index (AIx)
– pulse wave analysis (SphygmoCor)
*Aortic (carotid - femoral) pulse wave velocity
*Biochemical analysis
*Split into 3 groups
– according to Fasting glucose levels
Outcome:
People with impaired fasting glucose have an
increased aortic PWV (increased arterial stiffness). -> may explain, in part the increased
cardiovascular risk associated with IFG in the
absence of other CV risk factors
-> Since insulin decreases arterial stiffness,
insulin resistance is a possible explanation for
the relationship between fasting glucose and
aortic PWV
The Effect of Diabetes on Augmentation Index and Aortic PWV:
Most change in augmentation index observed before 50yrs
Most change in CF PWV observed after 50 years of age
Framingham data set
a longitudinal investigation of constitutional and environmental factors influencing the development of CVD in men and women.
Exercise and arterial stiffness-conflicting literature:
Reasons for conflict?
*Methods of assessment
*Type of exercise
*Age of cohorts
*Blood pressure of cohort
*Sites of artery assessment
The Effect of Aerobic Physical Activity on Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity and Fasting Blood Glucose Levels in
Older Individuals: objective-
To investigate the effect of physical activity on aortic PWV and fasting blood glucose
in older individuals
Methods:
ACCT study population (~12,000 individuals)
–>50 years
–Free from CVD and CV acting medication
–Only sedentary or physically active individuals were selected
262 were selected for a cross sectional analysis
