immunology case part 1 Flashcards
1
Q
what type of hypersensitivity reaction is anaphylaxis?
A
A. Type 1 hypersensitivity reaction
2
Q
pathological process of anaphylaxis?
A
A type 1 hypersensitivity reaction is the result of IgE mediated mast cell degranulation
3
Q
steps involved in a type 1 reaction?
A
- Sensitisation leading to antigen-specific IgE production
- Resting mast cells circulate in the body with antigen-specific IgEs attached
- Antigen enters body
- IgEs recognise and bind to specific antigen
- IgEs become cross-linked following antigen binding
- Mast cells are activated and degranulate
- Inflammatory mediators are released in the blood and tissues
4
Q
steps to take in anaphylactic patient?
A
- Begin ABCDE assessment and ask for help
- Secure airway +/- high-flow oxygen
- IM adrenaline + ECG monitoring
- Secure IV access
- IV antihistamine, IV hydrocortisone, IV fluids
- Nebulised salbutamol
