Immunology Flashcards
what are the physical aspects to tears that keep pathogens out of the eye?
- the flushing ability of tears
- mucous layer-antiadhesive
what immunological chemicals does tears contain?
lysozyme, lacoterrin and transferrin, complement, tear lipids, secretary IgA
what are the immunologically cellular components of tears?
neutrophils, macrophages, conjuctival mast cells
what is the only part of the eye that contains lymphatic drainage?
the conjuctiva
what do dendritic cells in the conjuctiva act as?
antigen presenting cells
what is meant by immune privilege?
areas of the body that are able to tolerate the introduction of antigens without eliciting an inflammatory immune response
what is sympathetic ophthalmia?
rare, bilateral, granulomotous uveitis due to trauma or surgery
what is thought to be the process behind sympathetic ophthalmia?
secondary to the development of an auto-immune reaction to ocular antigens that are exposed during the traumatic event
primary mediators in sympathetic ophthalmia?
T cells
