Immunization (Mehlmann FM 236)) Flashcards
What is Immunization
The process of inducing immunity against a specific disease
What are the types of immunization?
1) Passive immunization
2) Active immunization
What is Passive immunization?
The administration of preformed antibodies to induce transient protection against an infectious agent
What is Natural passive immunity?
Transplacental transfer of maternal antibodies during pregnancy provides protection for infants in the first few months
Indications for passive immunization?
1) Immune deficiency
2) Prophylactically: Post exposure prophylaxis
3) Therapeutically: To suppress the effect of a toxin or the inflammatory response
Types of passive immunization?
1) Intramuscular IG
2) Intravenous immunoglobulin
3) Hyperimmune globulins
4) Monoclonal antibodies
What is intramuscular Immunoglobulin?
A concentrated antibody-containing solution prepared from large pools of human plasma
Intramuscular Immunoglobulin mostly contains which Ig?
IgG
Indications for Intramuscular Immunoglobulin?
1) Prophylaxis for:
a) Hepatitis A
b) Measles
2) Immunoglobulin deficiency
Side effects of Intramuscular Immunoglobulin?
1) Anaphylaxis
2) Local inflammatory reaction
Intravenous immunoglobulin is prepared from:
Adult plasma donors
Intravenous Immunoglobulin mostly contains which Ig?
IgG
Indications for using Intravenous Immunoglobulin?
1) Prevention of serious bacterial infections in HIV and chronic B-cell leukemia
2) Immune deficiency disorders
3) Treatment of Kawasaki disease
4) Immune mediated thrombocytopenia
5) Prevention of infection after Bone Marrow Transplant
6) TSS, GBS, and anemia caused by B19
Side effects of Intravenous Immunoglobulin?
1) Infusion rate related: fever, headache, myalgia, chills, nausea, and vomiting
2) Anaphylactoid reaction
3) Thromboembolic disorders
4) Aseptic meningitis
5) Renal insufficiency
When should we vaccinate for Hep. A?
1) If going to endemic areas (e.g., Mexico, India).
2) Homosexuals
3) IV drug users!!!
