Immune system of the skin Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 types of skin infection?
A
- Primary: when the pathogen is a direct cause of disease
- e.g. demodectic mange caused by mites.
- Secondary: when infection results from underlying disease
- e.g. allergic disease causing pruritis leading to bacterial pyoderma
2
Q
What is the difference between a superficial and deep pyoderma?
A
- Superficial: affects the epidermis and hair follicles
- Deep: affects the dermis and/or deep dermis
3
Q
Hypersensitivity reaction
A
immune responses to innocuous antigens that lead to symptomatic reactions upon re-exposure.
There are various types (I-IV)
4
Q
Type I hypersensitivity
A
immediate hypersensitivity
Mediated by IgE activating mast cells
5
Q
Type II hypersensitivity
A
IgG antibodies against the cell surface/matrix antigens
6
Q
Type III hypersensitivity
A
antigen-antibody complex-mediated
7
Q
Type IV hypersensitivity
A
T cell mediated
8
Q
True/false: with all hypersensitivity types, there has to have been previous exposure and sensitisation of antibodies or T cells.
A
9
Q
What are the three types of Type IV hypersensitivity?
A
- Contact - antigen at the epidermis
- Tuberculin - intradermal antigen
- Granuloma - persistent antigen/foreign body presence
