Immune system and Painkillers Flashcards
What do antibiotics work on
Bacterial diseases
What do antibiotics not work on
Viral infections
What do painkillers do
They relieve the symptoms of viral infections
What do painkillers not do
They do not kill pathogens
What is the immune system made of
Mainly white blood cells
Why are pathogens identified by white blood cells
They all have different surface proteins (antigens)
Name the 3 ways that the white blood cells defend the body
They engulf and digest pathogens, they identify the antigen on the pathogen and then make specific antibodies to destroy the pathogen which takes time the first time but is quicker any subsequent times, and they make toxins and antitoxins so that only the pathogen is affected
