Immune System Flashcards
phagocytes
things that eat foreign attackers
lymphocytes
trackers that allow you to be immune the next time round
2 types of lymphocytes
B cells and T cells
B cells
are the military intel, bring back info on the attackers so that next time we know
T cells
go around looking for stuff that the B cells came in with and kill them, “killer T”
antigens
foreign substances in the body
antibodies
things that attach on to the antigens to alert killer T cells
leukocytes
white blood cells, seek out and destroy disease causing organisms
two types of leukocytes
phagocytes and lymphocytes
common phagocytes
neutrophil, which kills bacteria
doctors use check levels of neutrophil in the blood if they suspect a bacterial infection
–
lymphocytes made in the bone marrow
–
either stay in bone marrow and become B cells
–
3 types of immunities
innate, adaptive/active, or passive
innate immunity
we don’t get harmed by the same diseases as dogs and cats, also we have skin and mucous membranes that protect us
adaptive immunity
has to do with the lymphocytes, we don’t really get the same diseases again
passive immunity
we can get temporary immunity from things, as babies by drinking mothers breastmilk we get temporarily immune to everything she is immune to
4 problems with the immune system
immunodeficiencies, autoimmune disorders, cancer with the immune system, and allergenic disorders
allergenic disorders
when the body overreacts in response to a foreign substance
immunodeficiencies
when the body is lacking parts of the immune system. two types, primary and secondary
primary immunodeficiency
when the body is born without something important from the immune system
secondary immunodeficiency
when the immune system becomes disabled due to medications given or some disease. Cancer treatment can cause the immune system to die, targets fast growing cells like in the bone marrow
autoimmune disorders
when the immune system attacks itself
IgA deficiency
immunoglobulin A is an antibody that plays the role of making mucous. IgA deficiency is when the body doesn’t make enough of the mucous/saliva needed at bodily entrances making it easier for things to enter. this is the most common
Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) “bubble boy disease”
when born without B or T cells, makes you unable to fight germs, named bc a boy in Texas had to live that way
Chediak-Higashi syndrome chronic granulomatous disease (CGD)
involve the neutrophils not being able to function normally as phagocytes
DiGeorge’s syndrome
born without a thymus gland so not able to produce t cells
secondary immunodeficiency HIV AIDS
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome kills helper T cells
immunodeficiencies with medication
cancer treatments attack bone marrow
leukemia
cancer of the leukocytes
lymphoma
cancer of the lymphoid tissues
