Immune system Flashcards
Granulocytes
lots of small enclosed granules.
Monocytes:
named for their single, non-lobulated nucleus.
-become macrophages
Lymphocytes:
named for their lymphatic association
-very specific
Eosinophils stain with …
red eosin stain.
Basophils stain with a
more basic blue stain.
Leukocytes (white blood cells) function in the defense of the body. They can be divided into
granulocytes and agranulocytes.
Granulocytes—cytoplasmic granules
Neutrophils–Also called “Polymorphonuclear” cells because of their funky, lobulated nuclei
Eosinophils
Basophils
Agranulocytes—no cytoplasmic granules
Monocytes
Lymphocytes
Basophils
- histmines
- allergic reaction
Neutrophils:
Phagocytic. Their numbers increase during infections
Eosinophils:
Defend against parasitic worms; engulf pollen and animal dander.
Granules contain toxic molecules that attack parasites
Basophils:
Non-phagocytic
Contribute to allergic reactions
Granules contain Histamine
Monocytes:
Phagocytic
Migrate to tissues and become macrophages
Lymphocytes:
B cells
T cells
Cells of the immune system talk to each other, and to other cells of the body (bone, endothelial, etc…) via….
cytokines.
