Immune system Flashcards
What are barrier defences?
Skin and mucuous membranes, they prevent invasion.
What is innate immune response?
Immune response youre born with. Rapid and non-specific.
What is adaptive immune response?
Slower but more effective. Primarily controlled by lymphocytes.
Where are dietary lipids transported?
Lymphatic system
What does the lymphatic system do?
Drains body fluids and then returns them to the bloodstream.
What is lymph called once in lymphatic system?
Interstitial fluid.
What areas of the body dont contain lymph nodes?
CNS, bone marrow, teeth and the cornea of the eye.
Which duct drains the most surface area of the body? The right lymphatic duct or the thoracic duct?
The thoracic duct drains almost 3/4 of the body.
How does vitamin A aid the immune system?
It maintains epithelial cell integrity.
How does vitamin D aid the immune system?
Supports antimicrobial peptide production in the skin?
What are antimicrobial peptides?
Naturally occurring, small molecules that possess antimicrobial properties, acting as a defense mechanism against various pathogens like bacteria, fungi, and viruses. They target microbial cell membranes, break them down and lead to cell death.
How does zinc aid the immune system?
Maintains skin integrity and wound healing.
How does protein aid the immune system?
Its essential for tissue maintenance and repair.
How do fatty acids aid the immune system?
Maintains cell membrane integrity.
Function of B lymphocytes?
Generate diverse antibodies (proteins bind to specific invaders e.g. bacteria and mark them for destruction),
Function of T lymphocytes?
Secrete chemical messengers (adaptive immune). More about directly attacking infected cells and coordinating immune responses.
