Q

What is AIDS

A

Caused by HIV-1 lentivirus
Results in decreased CD4+ T cell numbers causing opportunistic infections, as they are involved in both cellular and hormonal immunity (secreting cytokines to induce antibody production by B cells)

Q

Type IV hypersensitivity

A

Cell mediated hypersensitivity, does not require antibodies
Mediated by T lymphocytes and macrophages
CD4+ T cells cause delayed type hypersensitivity by secreting cytokines that mediate inflammation, phagocytes and macrophages
CD8+ T cells cause direct cell cytotoxicity

E.g. granulomatous inflammation in TB, transplant rejection, rheumatoid arthritis, IBD
